In the quiet town of Bangadeniya, in Sri Lanka’s Puttalam District, a single night changed everything.
The Ditwa Cyclone brought relentless rain, and within hours the premises of CH/Bangadeniya National College were submerged under more than four feet of floodwater. Classrooms, libraries, and corridors—once filled with laughter and learning—were overtaken by muddy water and silence.
For nearly 1,000 schoolchildren, the flood was more than a natural disaster. It was the loss of school bags, books, uniforms, and the simple routines that give children a sense of safety and purpose. Just as the new school term was set to begin on the 5th of January, many children stood at the gates of their school with hope in their hearts—but nothing in their hands.
Responsibility Beyond Business
At Green Space, we believe that responsibility does not end at factory gates or balance sheets. It begins with people.
When we learned about the situation at the school, we knew that this was a moment to act—not later, not conditionally, but immediately. Because in times of crisis, human dignity and compassion must come before everything else.
Education is fragile after disaster. A small interruption can turn into a permanent setback. We felt it was our responsibility to help ensure that learning could continue.
A Small Act, A Powerful Meaning
As the school reopened for the new term, our team visited CH/Bangadeniya National College with a simple mission: to help children start again.
We donated 150 school bags to the affected students.
Each bag carried more than stationery—it carried reassurance.
For a child who has lost everything to floodwaters, a new school bag represents:
- A fresh beginning
- A return to routine
- A reminder that they are seen, valued, and supported
The smiles we saw that day reminded us of an important truth: sometimes, the smallest acts create the deepest impact.
Rebuilding Lives, One Step at a Time
Natural disasters may destroy buildings, but they should never destroy dreams. While rebuilding takes time, hope can be restored instantly when communities stand together.
